Afghanistan M Adil Ahmadzai
In the fight against preventable diseases, M Adil Ahmadzai has made it his mission to stop suffering before it starts by providing crucial vaccines for children in his community.
At the end of the day, I feel satisfied knowing that my work is helping protect children from preventable diseases
A passion anchored in community
Raised in a small village in Logar Province, Afghanistan, Adil’s early life was deeply entwined with the people around him. “Growing up there taught me the values of community, hard work and resilience,” he explains, “which continue to guide me in my personal and professional life.”
Recognising the importance of protecting communities, Adil knew he wanted to live a life of service. As soon as he graduated from school, he studied Nursing for four years, gaining the knowledge and skills needed to serve those around him.
“I joined the humanitarian sector because I want to make a positive difference in people’s lives, especially in protecting children’s health,” says Adil. “Vaccination allows me to directly help communities prevent diseases and improve their wellbeing.”
Long roads and patient compassion
Despite significant progress in recent years, there are still many barriers to accessing vaccinations for some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations. Clinics are often far from communities in need, vaccination campaigns can miss their target audience, and misinformation still leads to vaccine hesitancy amongst some parents.
Usually rising before dawn, Adil travels vast distances to reach children in remote villages. When he arrives, his mission can be complicated by parents who initially refuse his life-saving help:
“One of the main challenges I have faced is convincing some families who are hesitant or afraid of vaccines. I overcome this by speaking with them patiently, providing correct information, and building trust.”
No child left behind
For children isolated by geography, ineffective campaigns or a lack of information, Adil may be their only chance to get the preventative healthcare they need.
“I actively identify children missed during campaigns and ensure they receive their vaccines,” says Adil. “I also work to address vaccine hesitancy by understanding the reasons for refusal and finding the best solutions, which is crucial for our work.”
Convincing fearful parents takes patience, understanding and kindness, and Adil refuses to give up until he knows he has reached every child he can – no matter how long it takes.
Relentless effort for profound impact
For Adil, the long days of travelling and patiently working with parents have their own rewards.
“Even though the job can be challenging – travelling long distances, facing hesitant families, or working in difficult conditions – the positive impact I see, like healthy children and grateful families, keeps me dedicated,” shares Adil. “The satisfaction of making a real difference in people’s lives gives me the strength to continue despite the struggles.”
For those inspired to make a difference in the humanitarian sector, Adil has a simple message: “Stay patient, compassionate and committed. It’s important to be willing to learn, communicate effectively with communities, and always focus on helping those in need. Staying motivated by the positive impact you make will help you overcome the difficulties you may face.”
