Ukraine Volodymyr Shvaiko
Volodymyr Shvaiko, a specialist in information management, is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He has worked both as an engineer and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) analyst. His studies and commitment to physical and human geography have allowed him to master using information systems and GIS as a tool of recovery and reintegration to enhance humanitarian aid.
I'm driven by the opportunity to use my skills to help rebuild Ukraine into a thriving nation. Witnessing the power of GIS in aiding humanitarian efforts is incredibly inspiring.
Helping Ukraine using GIS
GIS is used to capture, store, and analyse geographical data. The system allows for the visualisation and interpretation of geographical patterns and relationships. Part of Volodymyr’s daily work includes processing and analysing satellite images, which are used by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service to develop field surveys of agricultural areas. This work is important because it provides data used to inform enhanced disaster management, sustainable development, and efficient decision-making in conflict areas.
When things get tough
Volodymyr’s work is complex: he must process large volumes of information in short periods of time while ensuring the data’s high quality is maintained. The field of information management is in a constant state of flux as automation improves. Volodymyr finds refuge from these challenges by relaxing with friends, reading, and staying physically active.
Staying relevant and motivated
Volodymyr is motivated to persevere in the humanitarian field by the sense of relevance and usefulness he receives from his job, as he contributes his expertise in information systems towards building his country into, “a highly developed state with an environmentally friendly economy.” GIS and other information systems are constantly evolving, and Volodymyr is keeping pace, setting new goals, and developing personally and professionally. He enjoys his job and the career advancement initiatives that CTG offers through their development courses and programmes.
Navigating challenging environments
Despite challenges, Volodymyr is motivated to work towards a better future for his country. When others hope to follow in his footsteps and put their skills to good use for the sake of their community, he advises them, “To be persistent in their work, innovative and creative in solving problems, and in the performance of their professional duties.”
