Gaza Asmaa Saad Azaiza

On-site Monitoring Quantity Surveyor Engineer
A Day in the life of CTG Staff
Being an Engineer is typically seen as a ‘man’s job’, and I wanted to prove to other Palestinian women that we can excel in a role like this.

When I was asked to supervise the construction of the Federation of Health Work Committees building in Gaza, I knew it was going to be a life-defining moment for me. I was excited but also afraid because it was the first time that a female engineer would be supervising the construction of a six-storey building. As an architect, I could not resist suggesting plans for the project. It was difficult to convince management of my ideas, but they eventually listened, and my director ended up expressing his gratitude as it solved a lot of space and design problems.

I received criticism from some of my male colleagues, they doubted my capabilities because I am a female engineer. I was at the head of my job as a site engineer; I oversaw  32 construction projects that required follow-up and observation, all while being nine months pregnant. With that experience, I was able to prove to myself and to others that I am more than capable.

To be able to do this job you need integrity, professionalism, and flexibility when it comes to dealing with unexpected situations. Instead of complaining about problems, always try and seek solutions. I work with strong and hardworking female engineers and each every one of them proves that the Palestinian women can work alongside men and excel at their jobs. I do not underestimate the role of men, but I am living proof that female engineers can succeed in this role.

I’m grateful for the support system we have at CTG. The company always strives to create a comfortable working environment for the employees, and they’re always open to hear our voices and receive suggestions.
